There’s still time for Archadeck of Central Maryland to custom design and build a one-of-a-kind outdoor living space for you and your family this year

Ipe Deck and Screened Porch - RockvilleAs you know summer is coming to an end and the precious time to spend with family enjoying the outdoors before the kids go back to school or off to college is dwindling quickly. Having a comfortable space where you can have quiet dinners alfresco, host cocktails and socializing under the stars or just relaxing while soaking up some sun is what helps to make a house a home. If your outdoor living space isn’t quite up to par to ensure that those special outdoor gatherings can become a tradition in your backyard…don’t worry. There’s still time for Archadeck of Central Maryland to custom design and build a one-of-a-kind outdoor living space for you and your family this year, rather than regretting not having a special “spot” for all of your special moments.

A crucial element in making the most out of the time spent outdoors comes from the functionality and beauty only an outdoor living space addition can provide. Archadeck of Central Maryland wants you to know if you are “on the fence” about moving ahead with your outdoor living space aspirations, now is the time to act. The fabulous weather of summer will be around a little bit longer and fall is right around the corner, so there’s still plenty of time to have a new project designed and built for lots of memory making events!

Archadeck deck, pergola and outdoor kitchenFor a top quality outdoor living space, it’s important for you to hire a custom outdoor structures builder, like Archadeck of Central Maryland. Building is an interactive process and extremely personal thing. The decisions you make as far as design and materials can impact your life and the life of your family for years to come. That is why it’s important to get it right the first time and you can if you use a builder whose skill set will translate into your needs. A good builder will have the insight, experience and knowledge to listen to you and help translate your needs and wants into a design and a structure that are right for you and your family.

Meeting with the homeowner and talking with them about the kinds of activities they want their outdoor structure to facilitate for them is one of our favorite parts of the process. We look over collected and compiled pictures and ideas of structure styles and features and then integrate them into a design rendering of their ideal outdoor structure. An extremely valuable tool, homeowners use the rendering to assist in the decision making process when deciding upon a certain outdoor structure. The rendering is very realistic and shows details not visible through an average one-dimensional black and white sketch. This realism gives you the ability to make changes and additions to the structure before construction begins. It is a truly “custom” feature that has proved invaluable in communicating with the homeowner.

Get comfortable outside, and stay that way in a custom outdoor room by Archadeck of Central Maryland no matter what the weather

Montgomery County Screened PorchesIn recent years, the popularity of the “outdoor room” setting has soared. An outdoor room is defined as any outdoor space that can provide a relaxed setting reminiscent of the comforts found within most interior living or family rooms. Covered porches, screened porches, sunrooms, and 3 and 4 season rooms are great examples of sheltered outdoor rooms that extend living spaces and the hours of leisure at home.

What are the benefits of having a comfortable porch or outdoor room and why are they so hot in Central Maryland this season? The pros are endless if you plan well and design your outdoor space to function effortlessly day or night for the way you want to live in outside. For homes in Howard County, Montgomery County and the surrounding areas, outdoor rooms are the perfect solution to enjoy your backyard during rain and inclement weather (of which we have certainly had our fair share of this season), for escaping the humidity and heat and of course nuisance insects of summer, like the mosquito.

Hectic schedules, rushing around for work and looking after our families, make the additional escape provided by an outdoor room very appealing. With so many covered space options, Archadeck of Central Maryland invites you to explore the benefits of each of these wonderful outdoor structures in order to help you gain better knowledge of which space would best suit your family’s backyard needs.

  • Open porch by Archadeck of Maryland

With round columns and a beautifully detailed ceiling design this covered porch has it all

The Covered Porch – Also referred to as “open porches” because they are protected from sun and unpredictable summer rainstorms, the covered porch offers the benefit of circulating fresh air with the bonus of a roof that provides shelter from the elements.

  • The Screened Porch – Giving you all the benefits of a covered porch plus one additional big benefit…protection from bugs! Keeping insects such as mosquitoes out of your outdoor living space is a huge benefit of having a screened porch. Keeping the bugs at bay will enable you to enjoy your porch late into the night without worry of being outside at the same time as mosquitoes.
  • Three season room with cedar ceiling and slate floor

Three season room with cedar ceiling and slate floor.

The Three-season room – Beefier than your average screened in porch or enclosed deck, a three season room addition is a good option for homeowners who want to enjoy outdoor living in style but don’t need the living space available all year long. For the windows, we use single-pane glass windows or the Eze-Breeze porch enclosure system (the best of both worlds, screen when you want it, or a more enclosed “windowed” room when you want it too) for unfettered use of the space in spring, summer and fall.

  • The Sunroom – Sometimes referred to as four season room, all-season or year round room, this option is integrated into the construction of your home, existing roof line and exterior. For ultimate climate control, we install insulated glass windows and insulation in the roof, floors and walls, for use of the room year-round.

Upscale, one-of-a-kind outdoor living spaces by Archadeck of Central Maryland extends the luxury and uniqueness of your home to the splendor of the beautiful landscaped and garden areas of your property. We are a custom design and build firm specializing in upscale outdoor living spaces which combine the opulence and comfort of your home’s interior with the ambiance of an outdoor environment with custom outdoor living amenities.

The knowledge and experience of our entire professional team spans a wide range of disciplines and skills placing us well above the average builder with “cookie-cutter” outdoor living spaces. Each project is designed and built to be a unique backyard retreat; a comfortable, amenity rich and versatile outdoor living environment to fit your character and personality while blending seamlessly with the architectural style of your home and its surroundings. As Central Maryland’s premier, professional luxury outdoor living space design and build firm, our primary goal is to provide you with a design tailor-made and lavishly appointed with all the features you desire which exceeds your hopes and dreams.

Archadeck outdoor kitchensAlthough we can, and do enjoy building decks, patios, screened porches and many other structures of all sizes, styles and budget ranges, it is our truest passion to work with homeowners on projects of a grander scale. It is in these magnificent designs, similar to those in home magazines, which are all-inclusive outdoor living combination spaces with all the “bells and whistles”, where we can demonstrate our full expertise. These outdoor rooms and open spaces which coalesce effortlessly include integrated outdoor kitchens with appliances, outdoor living rooms with high-end electronics and custom fireplaces and beautiful flagstone or paver hardscapes with integrated fire pits, along with customized screened porches and decks that all merge harmoniously as one luxurious outdoor escape.

Consistently coming in at the top of the list of most popular features is the outdoor kitchen, an entertaining essential for most any outdoor living space. No host or hostess wants to lose out on time with guests and with an outdoor cooking area, you can prep, mingle and party all at the same time. Your outdoor kitchen can be easily integrated into a deck or patio setting, poolside, or even within an attached or freestanding porch. Having the added capability to prepare food outdoors for gatherings, or even intimate dinners, as well as plenty of seating adds to the function of your outdoor space and opens the door to endless entertaining possibilities. While no backyard is complete without a gas grill, our luxury outdoor kitchen spaces can offer so much more – ranges, refrigerators, pizza ovens, warming drawers, rotisserie racks, smokers…absolutely anything the serious chef could desire! We can even include serving and food preparation areas providing more seating similar to that of an “eat in” interior kitchen with plenty of counter space to add bar stools for additional seating or to use as an outdoor bar area.

Archadeck deck, pergola and outdoor kitchen

Escaping into the outdoors with your family is always fun and adding the inviting warmth of a fire assures that your stunning luxury space can be enjoyed anytime of the day or night. Of course, nothing could be more enticing than an outdoor fireplace or fire pit to create and enhance the inviting ambience of an evening gathering place. Just imagine your guests sitting comfortably in your backyard enjoying casual conversation on a cool evening while feeling the warmth of a blazing fire from your outdoor fire feature. As everyone is relaxing, the appetizing aroma of dinner sizzling to perfection fills the air from your very own outdoor kitchen. This is outdoor living in all its splendor, pure elegance and luxury, and all for your pleasure in your backyard!

Ipe Deck and Screened Porch - Rockville

Beautiful Ipe deck and screened porch outdoor living combination in Rockville, MD.

When I’m asked what I do for a living, I say, “I have one of the best jobs possible…I help people make their dreams a reality”. Like the final piece to a puzzle, your outdoor living environment completes the process of making your house a home! Archadeck of Central Maryland  works with homeowners, like you, throughout Howard and Montgomery County and the surrounding areas to make your backyard your morning coffee and paper spot to start your day and your quiet retreat to which you escape each evening after a long day at work; your intimate dining space full of ambience just for two as well as the perfect place for all your family gatherings, barbecues and special events…and everything in between! Making your dream outdoor living environment a reality is what we do best.

Our business is exceptionally rewarding from a connection standpoint. Custom designing and building your outdoor living area starts with an onsite visit with you and a clear understanding of your mental picture of this space. Being able to see what you “see” when you think about your ideal backyard retreat, and then translate that into a design and a structure customized for you and your family starts with these types of questions:

  • How do you plan to utilize this space for special occasions and everyday use?
  • Will you cook, dine, entertain and relax in this area?
  • Are you considering the addition of a water or fire feature?
  • Do you want enclosed areas for protection, wide open spaces or a combination of both?
  • What are your personal tastes and style choices for materials and colors?
Silver Spring patio deck gazebo and pergola design rendering plan

Each Archadeck of Maryland client gets a design rendering showing exactly what their project will look like.

The design of a project is perhaps the most important phase of creating an outdoor living space. Seeing your home, the potential building site and talking one-on-one with you to obtain the answers to all these questions allows me to create a professional, custom design rendering, integrating all these things. This rendering, while taking into account your home’s architectural style and budget, provides you with a real image of what your dream outdoor living environment will look like…taking you one step closer to making it a reality.

It has been my experience, most homeowners find these renderings extremely valuable in the decision making process. The images are very realistic with an attention to detail, not visible through an average one-dimensional black and white sketch. This realism gives you the ability to make changes and additions to the structure before construction begins, better suiting your needs and budget. My main goal is to help guide you through this process from start to finish, ending up with an outdoor structure which is an extension of your living area you love because it is an expression of you.

With this vivid image of your ideal living space including all the bells and whistles, in front of you, you may catch yourself thinking this is more than you had in mind to bite off “all at once”. No worries, it’s a very common misconception that the perfect outdoor living space is well out of reach of being affordable. Remember how I said earlier, making your dream outdoor living environment a reality is what we do best…it absolutely is. We offer the convenience of a phased building program which allows you to construct your outdoor living space combination project in stages as your lifestyle and budget allows.

Have your cake and eat it tooPerhaps this season you begin with a deck, add a patio or porch in the fall, or even in advance of next year’s outdoor living season! This option will transform your backyard each season (like getting a new backyard each time) until the final design is completed. Archadeck-design-guideThe best design and structure we can build for you and the way you live outdoors comes from your answers to a wide variety of questions we ask, including:

  • For what activities will this space be primarily used? The best outdoor living structures are designed with perfect union in form and function. Will it include electronics like a big screen TV or surround sound system for large gatherings or do you wish to have a technology free zone, just right for rest and relaxation? Will your space need an outdoor kitchen area to be used for family barbeques and larger dinner parties? Do you want an open, exposed area to bask in the sun or do you prefer a covered area with protection from the elements? Better yet, how about a combination space which can be utilized for all of the above?
  • What is the terrain of your property like? Is it flat or does it have slopes? The terrain must be taken into consideration when selecting the structure and type of outdoor living space, but it doesn’t necessarily limit your options.

Additional aspects we consider when creating your custom space are the situation of your property in regards to sun exposure, favorite views you may have and the proximity of neighboring properties…all of which should be kept in mind when selecting the style and design.

Columbia MD deck gets transformed into a screen porch. Can your deck be transformed into a screen porch?

Screen porch builder Columbia MD deck builder

This design rendering shows what the anticipated completed Columbia, MD structure will look like.

Who doesn’t love spending time on their deck? Decks are great for entertaining, grilling out and soaking in the sun. However decks are “time sensitive”, meaning when the winds grow colder, or the autumn showers come to call you are deprived of many hours of enjoyment if a deck is your sole outdoor structure. One Columbia, MD porch builder is changing the way we look at decks by taking a portion of your deck, and in some cases the whole area, and turning it into an enclosed, insect free, rain-friendly haven screened porch or 3-season porch where you can welcome the beauty of the changing seasons without the harshness of the elements.

Columbia, MD deck before the transformation began.

This image shows the Columbia, MD deck before Archadeck of Maryland began the transformation.

That’s right. If your deck’s foundation is built to support a roof, you can covert all or a portion of your deck into a screen porch, open porch or enclosed room with a minimal amount of fuss. In this story Archadeck of Montgomery County and Archadeck of Central Maryland is converting a section of this Columbia, MD homeowners deck into a screen porch. We also go a step beyond a screened porch by using a convertible enclosure system that will extend this Columbia, MD homeowners enjoyment and use time well into the colder months.

This "before" photo shows the area where Archadeck of Maryland will be extending the overhang to accomadate the screen porch.

This "before" photo shows the area where Archadeck of Maryland will be extending the overhang to accommodate the screen porch.

This “in progress” transformation in Columbia, MD is proof positive that a screen porch doesn’t just need to be a screen porch.  This particular deck is located under the 2nd story overhang. We are expanding the overhang to accommodate the new living space and we will also be installing an accordion style folding screen door that will completely open up the area. In another portion we are going to be using an Artistic Enclosures system with sliding windows that also open completely. The homeowner wanted the enclosure to have the capability of being removable and also sliding. This is accomplished using the ScreenPlus contemporary system we are using to define the new space.

This area will encompass the new Columbia, MD screened / enclosed porch.

Once completed this Columbia, MD home will have the capability for enjoyment for 3 if not 4 seasons. The combination of outdoor structures will also be conducive to entertaining on a grander scale with areas for conversation, dining or whatever these homeowners  have in mind.

You may ask ” is my deck able to be transformed in the same manner”? And, the answer lies within your deck’s structure itself. Archadeck of Central Maryland and Archadeck of Montgomery County discusses the idea of converting your deck into a screen porch, or enclosed porch and gives valuable insight and technical  advice on doing this at your home.

Columbia_MD_screen_porch_builder_deck_builder

Can I Convert?

You may be able to convert with minimal effort, but in many cases the foundation will have to reinforced. In a screen porch scenario for example, you must have the capability to support the perimeter because that is where all the snow loading and roof load areas come into play. In this situation we will need to add footings at the perimeters where the walls attach. If your original deck was a permitted project to begin with, then there is a  possibility that you won’t need additional foundation reinforcement. A licensed, custom builder will be able to address any foundation concerns before you begin your conversion.  If you are building onto a deck that has decking boards that have gaps, then we install screen under the structure to keep insects out and may install skirting around it as well. When building a porch from the ground up and making it convertible, you will probably want to choose a flooring which contains no gaps. You also want to choose a material that ensures your boards won’t succumb to cupping, this is important when considering a lower grade material. Ventilation is also important when choosing your flooring material.

As you can tell, many consideration go into turning your deck, or a portion thereof, into a screen porch, covered porch or enclosed porch. A strong firm foundation is the important factor when deciding to transform your deck. Archadeck of Central Maryland and Archadeck of Montgomery County  can make sure your structure is strong from the ground up and can turn your deck into an all season place of refuge and enjoyment. Top 5 reasons to build your screen porch this fall

Archadeck of Maryland outdoor space with gazebo, firepit, grill area, privacy fence and much more

This outdoor space has it all, a screened gazebo, fire pit and grill area all of which can add the utmost enjoyment during the fall months.

Fall comes into our lives each year like a daydream with visions of crimson and amber leaves set adrift on a fall wind, and the pleasant feeling of acorns falling from majestic oaks that play party to scampering chipmunks and squirrels. As one of the most dramatic seasons, autumn is best enjoyed as a front row spectator. The aromas, the mild temperatures and above all the flurry of colors can serve as an inspiration to your daily life from your very own outdoor structure. Imagine curling up on your chaise lounge with your favorite throw while enjoying a  cup of chai tea and witnessing the magic of the season up close and personal from your new screened porch. This scene is delicious, especially when you are flipping through a current issue of your favorite home and garden magazine and realizing the images within the pages don’t hold a candle to the beauty that is present in your very own backyard from your stunning custom outdoor structure with mother nature’s imagery as your backdrop.

Archadeck of Maryland screened porch

This screened porch by Archadeck of Maryland offers a vantage point to watch the leaves change.

Imagine the amount of fun and family memories that can be made in the fall while making smore’s on your very own outdoor fireplace or fire pit. The cool breezes, the warm enticing glow of the fire and the warmth of your loved ones around you. Fall is the perfect season to build your outdoor structure for many reasons, we have broken these reasons into a list of the top 5 to serve as much for inspiration as for guidance.

Top 5 reasons to build your outdoor structure this fall

#1) There is still time to enjoy– There is still plenty of time to enjoy your new structure this season. The upcoming weeks still hold the promise of nice enough weather to be able to enjoy your new structure.

#2) A front row seat to fall– The leaves in some areas are just now getting their tinges of fall color, with many weeks of beauty that lie ahead. Wouldn’t you rather see the season unfold from the comfort of your outdoor structure as opposed to looking at it from a window in your home. Fall is the definitely the prettiest time of the year to build.

#3) Get in on the savings– Undoubtedly, prices on low maintenance building materials are destined to go up again in 2012. Indeed they go up at the beginning of each year. If you start your construction in the fall, you will have the edge on saving money because you will have begun before prices rise again in the upcoming new year.

#4) Avoid the rush– You can avoid the rush on building during the spring when everyone else decides to get things started. In the fall there is not a long waiting period to begin your project, and come spring you will be “sitting  pretty” in your completed structure, while everyone else is still waiting to begin construction on theirs.

#5) Stop and smell the flowers– Many seasonal perennials can be damaged when the soil around them is disturbed during the extreme cold of winter or the excessive heat and humidity of summer. Uprooting or disturbing the soil and roots of plants like Rhododendrons and Azaleas which are commonly used as foundation plantings can damage the plant and leave the plant susceptible to disease, fungus and insects.

Outdoor fireplace on screened porch

An outdoor fireplace used within a screened porch can add warmth as well as offer an intimate setting for chilly autumn nights.

Another great benefit of building your outdoor structure in the fall is being able to take advantage of all those end of-season discounts on accoutrements  and accessories for your outdoor space such as outdoor furniture, grills and decorative items. Autumn is the time for deep discounts on these items and can give you the ability to stretch your dollar further than if you were purchasing these items in peak season.

Archadeck of Maryland captures the charm and beauty of a by-gone era in covered porch design

When I think of the concept of an open porch design my mind drifts to the grace of a structure constructed with white columns where you spend the late afternoon relaxing and sipping iced tea. This image takes me back to a time when things were simpler and the world moved a little bit slower.  The covered porches of today encompass that same great architecture that we remember from an era gone by. Round columns used in an open covered porch are still hugely popular and are considered quite upscale. When you look at a screened porch, the first thing you notice are these columns, which is part of the covered porch’s appeal and charm. The columns are used to make an architectural statement as well as laying a firm foundation for the structural integrity of the structure itself.

We enjoy designing and building both screened porches, and covered or open porches. If you’re thinking about adding a new porch to your home, how do you decide which is best for you? I’ll talk about several factors that may help you decide whether screens or open air are best for you.

Shape

In terms of shape, screened porches, because of the screens and the architectural limitations of making a screened structure, usually end up with a boxed structure, either square or rectangular. The dimensions are usually kept within certain confines to make the screened porch functional and in ratio to the existing house. Covered, open porches are very different in the aspect of what can be done in terms of shape. An open porch gives you more design flexibility by the use of columns. Covered porches can also be built in different shapes, like a half octagon, or even a full octagon reminiscent of a gazebo style design. The use of decorative columns is beautiful and is always popular.

Columns

Round columns, Georgian and Roman style columns, capital base and trim and even ogee ends halfway up the columns are commonly used in the construction of covered or open porches. Because screening does not need to be attached, column options are greater. The type of columns you choose should complement your home’s architecture, but in the same token, you can choose a design that will have a striking impact on the appearance of the entire back of your residence. With a custom designed and professionally built covered porch you can transform your average looking backyard into something truly magnificent.

Protection from the elements

With an open porch design you will get the same amount of sun protection that you would with a screened porch and you get a little better breeze because there is nothing to impede the air flow. There are drawbacks though, to choosing a covered “open” design versus  screened design. This would be the insects. The insect barrier within a covered porch is non-existent without the luxury of an independent influence. Ceiling fans are commonly used on covered porches to help circulate the air and they provide some minimal insects protection. Insects are less likely to land on you when there is a constant flow of air. A covered porch is an ideal choice for people who want the open feel as well as the endless design possibilities, and those who have a higher tolerance level for insects or those who incorporate pest control into their landscape.

Ceilings and electrical

The homeowner has the same options with a covered porch as with a screened porch. Some examples of these options include open or closed rafters, recessed lighting ,skylights, electrical outlets and the capability to mount entertainment equipment such as TV’s, stereos and speakers. There are even open porch designs that incorporate  the luxury of an outdoor fireplaces or outdoor kitchen as well.

Another viable option is to construct a deck and covered porch combination structure. In this structure, the porch sits on a deck and the deck extends a significant distance past the porch area. When designing this type of deck/porch combination, Archadeck of Maryland usually extends the deck surface five feet beyond the room and doesn’t add railings. The absence of the railing opens up the deck area and gives you a nice flow from covered to non-covered area as well as from the deck into the yard. This type of design supports the feng shui principles of “less is more”, and not impeding the visual flow from one structure to another.

This upcoming project we are working on in Highland, MD incorporates these same design principles. We are using Square columns, which are large and square to match the homes existing columns. This will ensure the house will match from front to back. When you walk in the home’s entryway, you will see french doors that will lead into the structure. With the aid of a design renderings, which we provide to all of our clients, the homeowners are actually able to “virtually” experience the views of the design before construction begins.
